Our first full CD release. Actually 'Red Mohair Jumper' had been on a couple of Lodge Records compilation CDs but this was our first proper single really. The relationship with Lodge, which was as odd as it gets considering they generally dealt in Irish MOR and folky stuff, came about when it's head honcho Pat Dempsey was a judge in the Hot Press Songwriter of '92 competition I won. I say I won as like many bands we'd multiple entries (quite against the rules) . Drei Bahnhoffen Bitte was actually The Hitchers entry. RMJ was entered by one Niall Quinn. Pat offered me a small publishing deal for a couple of tracks and this single is basically what we got out of it. Three of the recordings were more than a couple of years old when this came out but I think the idea was to try and capitalise on the bit of raised profile we'd gotten from the Beatbox New Band Challenge thing we'd made the final in. The only new song it was so new the paint was still wet on it. Big Mug was recorded in Dublin in an overnight session in Sun a couple of months before the release. I can hear all the things that are wrong with it - dreadful tinny mix, drums all over the shop, bass popping in and out ...but I just love it. I can't argue that the version on F&G that came out as a single isn't "better" ...because technically it obviously is -but this version just does something for me. It's got more of the Buffalo Tom/Lemonheads vibe I'd have been listening to and was trying to get in on maybe. I got so sick of the whole 'Red Mohair Jumper' thing. I most certainly do sound affected on it -though not like I'm putting on an English accent as was once ridiculously claimed (for starters you won't hear R's that overstated this side of a Proclaimers record) but it does sound like I'm trying to be a social climber or something. The only other recordings from the early '90's I do lead vocals on is the TCSU demo and I'm doing the same on that. Very annoying and glad I grew out of it. Though Puiríní had made a promo-vid for Alice Is Here back in 1990 and Beatbox did likewise for Red Mohair Jumper -She'll Be Sorry was the first time we actually got someone to come in and work on a video. Mark Long made the video that got repeat plays on No Disco throughout 1995 and into 1996. |
