Murder He Did is backed by stomping live favourite ‘Fattened Calf Meet Sharpened Axe’, an acoustic version of ‘There’s A Girl Pinned Under The Back Wheels Who Swears She’s Kylie’ (some people will do ANYTHING to get on television) and in an act of philanthropic kindness all too rare these days – They’ve included last years single ‘Legalise Murder’ as a bonus track for those who missed out on the debut release.  Murder He Did’ and ‘Fattened Calf Meet Sharpened Axe’  were recorded in Balls Of Iron, Limerick under the watchful eye of Mark O’Connor –(who’s previous credits include Giveamanakicks ‘Is It OK to be Loud Jesus?’) while  ‘There’s A Girl Pinned Under The Back Wheels Who Swears She’s Kylie’ was recorded by Mr. Quinn himself in the 4-3-3 Boot room. Legalise Murder (Bonus track) –A-side of the pennywhores debut single released November 2004) The Pennywhores 2nd single ‘Murder He Did’ is a tale of a naughty boy with a dirty secret and a loud, irksome skeleton in the closet (or is it under the floorboards?...or  in the wall cavity maybe?) who in his psychosis has become convinced  that a certain fictitious nosey nine pence writer-investigator has figured him out and is on his tail.   Niall Quinns seems to have been elevated to punk- hero status in Limerick, thanks to his work with The Hitchers and now as mainman in this bunch. Engaging stuff it is too, ramshackle in the extreme but hugely endearing. 'Murder He Did' is a top notch pop tune, complete with ooh-ooh backing vocals, chunky guitar riffs and Quinn's own highly accented singing. There's maybe too much of the late '80s indie feel in the quirky, Angela Lansbury referencing lyrics and artwork but you really can't help but love this.Hot Press March 05
